Description

Gangtok: Gangtok is one of the more popular hill destinations in India`s northeast region. Most travelers visit Gangtok with the idea of catching a glimpse of the spectacular Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak in the world. On a bright, sunlit day it is a sight to behold. Part of the lower Shivalik hills of mighty Himalayas, Gangtok stands at an altitude of 5047 feet (null.3 meters). Gangtok roughly means `Majestic or Lofty Hill`. Prayer flags fluttering in gay abandon, lamas busy mumbling holy chants, brightly painted pagoda roofed houses lined with begonias and orchids, are some the signature sights of this hill town. Lepchas, Bhutias and Nepalis comprise the main ethnic groups of the town. In recent years, Gangtok has emerged as a centre of Tibetology. Travelers interested in Tibetan Buddhism and culture make a beeline to the towns many monasteries and institutions of learning..

Tshangu Lake: Tsomgo Lake, also known as Tsongmo Lake or Changu Lake, is a glacial lake in the East Sikkim Distric of the Indian state of Sikkim, some 39 kilometres (24 mi) from the capital Gangtok. Located at an elevation of 3,653 m (12,213 ft), the lake remains frozen during the winter season. The lake surface reflects different colours with change of seasons and is held in great reverence by the local Sikkimese people. Buddhist monks prognosticated after studying the changing colours of the lake.

Baba Mandir: Major "Baba" Harbhajan Singh was an Indian army soldier who died in 1968 near the Nathu La pass in eastern Sikkim. He is revered by soldiers of the Indian army as the Hero of Nathula and the army men have built a shrine in his honour. He has been accorded the status of a saint by believers who refer to him as the Baba which means saintly father in Hindi. Many of the faithful people, chiefly Indian army personnel posted in and around the Nathu La Pass and the Sino-Indian border between the state of Sikkim and Chinese occupied Tibet believe that his spirit protects every soldier in the inhospitable high altitude terrain of the Eastern Himalayas. Lot of people believe that Baba also grants favours to those who revere and worship him. There are 2 Baba temples. One on the way from Nathu La to Gangtok and the other one is at a place between Nathu La and Jelepla pass. The one below is a new shrine. The older one is normally not on the regular tourist itinerary and one has to specifically request the tour operator to take there. But the original one is definately worth visiting because here they have preserved the original bunker used by Baba alongwith the stuff used by him in his routine. Its a good experience..

Nathula Pass: Nathula, one of the highest drive roads in the world, is a mountain pass in the Himalayan peaks that co-joins Sikkim and China. Nathula Pass is situated on the Indo-Chinese border and is one of the biggest tourist attractions in India.Ô_Several tourists flock here every year for trekking in the valley and enjoying the scenic beauty. There are a number of waterfalls that gush along the way from Gangtok to Nathula. It also offers an opportunity to see beautiful snow peaks encircling the area. Situated on the Indo-Tibetan border 14450 ft. above sea level, Nathu La is one of the most important Himalayan passes in the country. The mountain pass is situated at a few kms away from Gangtok in Sikkim. Nathu La is one of three open trading border posts between India and China and is famous for its picturesque beauty and beautiful environment. The temperature here remains low for most parts of the year and Nathu La becomes a hotspot for tourists during summer. The cold wind blowing across at great speed is a phenomenon worth experiencing in Nathu La. A number of waterfalls are present on the way from Gangtok to Nathula. Tsomgo Lake is a popular tourist destination in the region and though it does not have human inhabitation, the place is a home for birds like black eagle, blue whistling thrush, redstarts, folk tails, tit-babblers, etc. The region also supports Himalayan wildlife like Tibetan gazelle, snow leopard, yaks, Tibetan wolves, etc.

Situated further up at a distance of 16 kms, at an altitude of about 16,000 feet is Yumesamdong. The rugged vegetation- free mountains, especially in the months of November-December and February¬March over here present a breathtaking scenario. The approach to Yumthang is from Lachung valley, situated at a height of 8000 feet. It is at a distance of 120 kms from Gangtok. It has a unique self-governing body called the Dzumsa, which substitutes the modern Gram Panchyat. The village, spread out on the either side of Lachung Chu, has managed to retain its unique culture and tradition.

Pelling: Pelling is located in the West of the Sikkim and at an elevation of 7200 feet. Pelling is one of the quaint places of Sikkim far away from the hustle and bustle of the town. It is located 120 km from Siliguri and 15 km from Gangtok. Amongst other places of interest Pelling is known for its peaceful environment, jolly people, simple lifestyle and some of the majestic view of the mountains.
